Route Navigation & Safety Notes
-
The race route is not marked – navigation is up to each participant
-
Start is on the hotel parking lot – includes a short bootpack section before reaching snow
-
All participants follow the same summit sequence and pass:
-
The reindeer fence
-
The Lonely Tree loop twice
-
🚫 Avalanche hazard areas – Do Not Enter:
-
Palkaskuru
-
End of Vatikuru
-
Pyhäkuru
These zones are steep and avalanche-prone. The route is designed to avoid them:
-
From Pyhäkero to Palkaskero, descend via the reindeer fence
-
From Taivaskero, descend through Lonely Tree (not via Vatikuru)
Each summit in the 7 Summits route will have a staff member from the trail patrol, but they may not be at the peak at all times (e.g. due to weather). You must either ski over the summit or circle it closely to ensure valid completion.
⏱️ Participants may be asked to submit their GPS track after the race for verification (especially in the 7 Summits Championship).
If you don’t have a GPS watch, take a photo at each summit as proof.
🧑🤝🧑 Ethics & Event Spirit
This is a competitive event, but safety and respect come first.
-
Assist any injured participant – helping others takes priority over race results
-
Respect the wilderness, fellow skiers, and the rules of the National Park
-
Move safely and responsibly in backcountry terrain
💡 Additional Notes
-
No aid stations on the course – bring your own snacks, water, and gear
-
External assistance is not allowed if you wish to compete in the official SM series
-
Keep an eye on weather updates – strong winds are common in Pallas, and you’ll be above the treeline the entire time
-
Make sure your backpack includes spare gloves and warm clothing
